Josh Abramson and Ricky Van Veen were typical college freshmen in 1999, when they got the idea to post silly pictures of themselves on the Internet. They posed doing “stupid college stuff,” Mr. Abramson said, like putting plungers on their heads at the local hardware store or sticking metal objects in a toaster.
